About This Attraction
The Bhisho Massacre occurred on 7 September 1992, where 28 people were shot by Ciskei police force when they attempted to enter Bhisho Stadium. It is estimated about 80 000 protesters gathered outside of Bhisho, and demanded an end to the military government of Brigadier Joshua Gqozo and to demand the reincorporation of Ciskei into South Africa during the final years of apartheid. Brigadier Joshua Gqozo resisted the demands and ordered his troops to open fire to the protesters.
A memorial, situated on the road between King William’s Town and Bhisho just opposite the stadium, has been erected. Most of the fallen were buried in the new Ginsberg cemetery.
