About This Attraction
This is the second worst massacre in the History of South African liberation struggle that took place in 1992, just two years before the African National Congress (ANC) came to power. In the year 1992, 80 000 members of the ANC were led into a direct confrontation with 500 black troops of one such homeland- Ciskei.
The Ciskei government had warned them not to cross the stipulated border, but senior members of the South African Communist Party played a key role leading the throng straight into a confrontation with Ciskei army. Two and half minutes of automatic gunfire by the Ciskei soldiers left 28 dead and hundreds injured.
The purpose of the march was to force Brigadier Oupa Gqozo to step down from power and abolish Ciskei homeland.
