About This Attraction
Stephen Bantu Biko is one the recognised leaders of the Black Consciousness Movement and regarded as one of the greatest martyrs of anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa. Born in Tylden, he moved to and lived in the township of Ginsberg just outside King Williams Town. Steve Biko died on 12 September 1977 whilst in police custody, after being held for 26 days under the Terrorism Act.
On 12 September 1997, a bust of the fallen hero was unveiled and the Steve Biko Garden of Remembrance was officially opened by former president, Mr Nelson Mandela.
