Established in 1921 and considered one of the most interesting natural and cultural history museums in the country, the East London Museum feature a number of fine exhibits. It is home to the original coelacanth, a prehistoric fish that lived in the Indian Ocean for 400 million years and was thought to be extinct, until it was re-discovered off East London coast in 1938. This discovery of a live coelacanth was regarded international as the most significant zoological find of the century.
There are also two galleries devoted to Maritime History. The one features the Portuguese, Dutch and English shipwrecks as well as displays on the Oceanos and the Grosvenor. There is a gallery where the full history of the harbor is on display.
A visit to this museum is a must for all visitors to the city.
