About This Attraction
Situated on the corner of Argyle and Cambridge Streets in the CBD, the East London Public Library was designed by Cordeaux & Walker in the Neo-Classical style and was built in 1905. It was officially opened by Sir Walter Hely-Hutchinson, the Governor of the Cape Colony. The colonnade functions to effectively screen the windows of the building.
The library itself moved to new premises in 1958, and the premises are currently used as the ‘Whippery’ of the Buffalo City Municipality. ‘Whippery’ is the collective of Chief Whips of the different political parties represented in council.
